The Hanseatic League was an alliance of trading cities and their guilds that established and maintained a trade monopoly along the coast of Northern Europe, from the Baltic to the North Sea and inland, during the 1200s - 1600s, with their own law system and furnishing their own protection and mutual aid.

Because of the rise of modern nationalism, the system may be unfamiliar to many today.
